N. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL.
This
renovation of a vintage 3000 sq.ft. lakefront condo in Chicago’s Gold
Coast required careful detailing and meticulous installation to
harmonize with the apartment’s original grandeur. The renovation
featured custom millwork, tile, and stonework for three and one half
new bathrooms and a new gourmet kitchen.
All
of the bath and kitchen millwork was custom designed to resolve
specific design problems presented by each space. The kitchen cabinets
were designed to appear as pieces of furniture rather than standard
cabinets. They incorporate a refinished silver sink from an
original butler’s pantry. The master bathroom furniture makes the most
of the restrictive, original bathroom. By designing the cabinet as a
washstand, it’s underside remains open, fostering a more fluid and
open perception of the room. Matching barrel fronted taborets flank
the washstand, and provide ample and accessible storage. The entire
composition is topped with an oversized wall hung medicine cabinet,
which is equipped with large mirrored doors. These amplify the
limited natural light and create an illusion of greater space without
losing the vintage character of the room. |
